Gas pedal repairs accelerate

Written on February 6, 2010 by admin

COLONIE — Area Toyota dealerships began the painstaking job of fixing gas pedals Thursday on vehicles that are part of the company’s massive safety recall.

Local dealers were trying to make the process as pain-free as possible for their customers.

“Things are going very smoothly today,” a calm Eric Rosen, general manager of Lia Toyota of Colonie, said Thursday afternoon after about 50 cars had been repaired. “The customers, loyal Toyota owners, have been great throughout all of this.”

The Japanese car maker is repairing 2.3 million vehicles in the United States amid concerns that the gas pedals can get stuck or are slow to return to the idle position. That follows a recall of 5 million vehicles in the fall when it was discovered that the floor mats could trap the gas pedals.

Rosen said that the dealership, on Central Avenue, is telling customers that if they drop off their recalled cars before 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, their repairs will be completed for pick-up when the shop opens at 7 the next morning. The service department will close earlier Friday through Sunday, so Rosen said cars need to be dropped off earlier on those days.

The repairs take roughly two and a half hours, and Rosen said he is staffing the service department around the clock to make the process as easy as possible for car owners. A free car wash is included. The repairs are free.

“It’s very upbeat,” Rosen said. “We’re trying to make if as convenient as possible for our customers.”

At Glens Falls Toyota & Scion, owner Howard Lebowitz said calm also prevailed there. He said his service managers were at a training session Thursday at Lia Toyota to learn how to make repairs. His service employees were planning to make the first repairs to the company’s loaner vehicles Thursday afternoon and then start fixing customer cars today.

He said he would offer free oil changes and loaner cars to customers who have to drop off their Toyotas.

“It’s very calm here,” Lebowitz said. “We’re going to keep the same hours. We have the parts.”

Clifton Park studies development effects

Written on February 4, 2010 by admin

CLIFTON PARK — The Clifton Park Industrial Development Agency is undertaking a $35,000 study to determine how it can best take advantage of development in the town — and how it might ease the tax burden on residents.

The “fiscal and tax base analysis” is being done by Camoin Associates Inc., an economic development consulting firm in Malta.

The town itself won’t be paying for the study. Rather, it is being paid for through the new Clifton Park IDA Economic Development Fund. The IDA, which earns fees from the development projects it puts together, created the fund with $350,000 from its own general fund.

On Monday, the town board voiced its support for the study, which is expected to take about four months to complete.

The study will review zoning and land-use requirements, tax revenues and the overall fiscal health of the town.

Everyone Actually is a Critic

Written on February 4, 2010 by admin

Business owners and reviewers have always had a very tenuous relationship. With the rise of social media review sites, literally everyone is a critic. Inc. traces the rise of Yelp, and the effect it’s having on emerging businesses. Just remember when responding to reviews, be honest and professional in tone.

Yelp was founded in San Francisco in 2004 by Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons, two men in their 20s who wanted to make it easier for consumers to find good businesses and avoid bad ones. What they created was an online yellow pages with attitude. Yelp lets anyone critique any business and grade it, with ratings from one star to five stars. Yelp then uses a closely guarded algorithm — the company won’t discuss even the basics of how it works — to determine which reviews are displayed prominently, which are buried, and which are removed from the site.
