Some businesses like it hot

It is Christmas in July for anyone in the business of keeping people cool.
As temperatures climb into the triple digits home air conditioner repair, auto air conditioner repair, ice suppliers and chilly treat vendors are working overtime to satisfy demand.
“We thrive on everybody else’s misery, whether it’s freezing cold or really hot, one way or the other,” said Jere Zimmerman, vice president at Summers & Zim’s, a family run heating/air conditioning company based in Atglen.
This week, Summers & Zim’s has a crew of 13 service techs in 13 trucks on the road, many working up to 16 hours a day, said Zimmerman, a member of the third-generation in the family business.
Though Summers & Zim’s is busy now, it is not swamped yet. Zimmerman expects that to happen by the end of the week.
In the Philadelphia region, forecasters are predicting the mercury will reach 95 degrees on Thursday and close to 100 on Friday. With the humidity, it will feel like 105-110.
Ouch.
To prepare for the onslaught of service calls, Summers & Zim’s is putting a hold on installation work at the end of the week to keep slots open for customers who need emergency repairs, Zimmerman said. The open slots go to customers with service contracts. They get same-day service.
“No service contract? Never worked for them before? They might have to wait a while,” Zimmerman said.
Zimmerman, a 30-year veteran of the HVAC business, said what pushes customers to call for service are nights when the temperatures stay above 80 degrees. As long as nights are in the 70s, people will suffer through the days with a fan on and the windows open so long as they can sleep at night.
