Jobless figure falls slightly across Liverpool city region

Unemployment in the Liverpool city region showed little change over the past month, according to the latest Governent figures.
The number of people claiming jobseeker’s allowance in Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, Knowsley, Halton and St Helens fell last month from 53,352 to 53,118 – a drop of just 0.44%. And year-on-year the numbers claiming JLA increased by 5.6%.
Of the six city region boroughs, Knowsley showed the biggest fall, with the numbers claiming JSA dropping from 6,112 last month to 5,791.
Nationally, the number of people claiming JSA showed the biggest monthly rise for more than two years. The figures also revealed a record number of people working part-time because they could not find a full-time job.
A total of 1.52m people were claiming JSA last month, a rise of 24,500 over May and the biggest monthly increase since May 2009. The number of women on JSA increased by 9,500 to 493,900, the highest figure since 1996.
